Con Coc Islet: A Guide to The "Toad" Islet

Con Coc Islet is located in the southeastern part of Halong Bay, approximately 13 kilometers from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. This small rock island rises about 9 meters above the shimmering surface of the sea. The name Con Coc translates to "Toad" in English, aptly reflecting the shape of the rock, which resembles a giant toad patiently waiting for rain.
According to Vietnamese legend, there was a time when the gods neglected to bring rain for an extended period, leading to severe drought and threatening the survival of various species in Vietnam. In a moment of desperation, a courageous toad took the lead, gathering a group of animals to petition the gods for rain, hoping to alleviate their suffering. The toad’s efforts were rewarded with success, and it has since been celebrated through this natural rock formation in Halong Bay.
In Vietnamese culture, the croaking of a toad is often interpreted as a sign of impending rain or bad weather, serving as a natural indicator for farmers to anticipate coming downpours.
