Getting Around Halong Bay: Guide to Public Transportation

The easiest and safest way to get around Halong Bay is by tour bus. If you’re looking for a little more independence, fear not! There are excellent alternatives for getting around Halong Bay.

Getting Around Halong Bay: Guide to Public Transportation

1. Taxi

First up, the taxi! Traveling around Halong Bay by taxi remains a convenient option in 2025. There are numerous taxis available to take you to the pier, the airport, or virtually anywhere else you'd like to go. Local taxi drivers can often share helpful travel tips along the way!

Taxi fares in Vietnam remain affordable. The base fare starts around 7,000 VND (approximately $0.30 USD), with subsequent rates around 16,000 VND ($0.70 USD). It's wise to choose reputable taxi companies such as Ha Long Taxi, Mong Cai Taxi, or Mai Linh Taxi. If unsure about a taxi's reliability, opt for a different vehicle.

When you enter a taxi, ensure the meter is visible and functioning. Having the hotel receptionist order a taxi for you can be a reliable option.

2. Car/Motorbike Rental

While taxis are convenient, they don't provide the same flexibility as your own transportation. Numerous rental services are available around town, but securing a bike or car through your hotel is typically the most reliable approach. If renting from another company, thoroughly inspect the vehicle before departure and take photos of any existing damage to avoid disputes later.

If stopped by law enforcement, avoid handing over your passport or driver's license, and consider feigning a lack of English proficiency.

Bike

The rental cost for a bike will vary based on its type. Semi-automatic bikes are generally more cost-effective than automatic ones. A semi-automatic bike can be rented for around 120,000 VND (roughly $5.50 USD) per day, while an automatic bike costs about 180,000 VND ($8.00 USD).

For navigating the city, an automatic bike is ideal. However, for mountain excursions, a semi-automatic bike may serve you better.

Always wear a helmet, as traffic police are known to issue on-the-spot fines for minor infractions. A full-face helmet is recommended, given the often hazardous conditions of Vietnamese roads.

Car

Renting a car offers a comfortable way to explore. Daily rates will range from 1,000,000 VND to 1,500,000 VND ($45 to $70 USD). Cars provide more safety than bikes, offering better protection, especially if you're not confident navigating Vietnamese roads alone.

Considering the hot climate of Halong Bay, particularly in summer, a car's air conditioning is another significant advantage. Both cars and bikes are excellent choices for getting around this beautiful area.
